In an effort to appear normal, he pulled away from his family. It was in the process of doing that when he met Paige, a young, sweet girl who played cello and knew nothing about the darker side of his family. It was love at first sight for the fifteen year old boy, and it didn't take long for others to pick up on his infatuation. [REDACTED] The next day, she was found mauled in the school hallway.

After Paige, Derek remained distant and detached. Even though he was fairly smart, he lost interest in school. It became a chore, and Derek allowed his grades and extra curriculars to idle, settling for barely passing before dropping out in his senior year.
